Hidden Treasures book coverWith increased multi-channel competition, Channel 5 has to find alternative ways to generate secondary revenues outside its core activities of advertising sales and sponsorship. It is the Commercial Development team whose key focus is to drive incremental revenue, whilst developing its brands beyond the television screen.

The Diet Doctors book coverThe platforms used to meet this remit include DVD’s, book publishing, merchandise, live events and telephony interaction with viewers.

Commercial development work closely with production companies on a number of book publishing deals to coincide with transmissions. To date these have included Diet Doctors, Colin and Justin’s How Not to Decorate, Hidden Treasure Houses, History of the Victoria Cross, The Baby Mindreader, Milkshake! and Make My Child Brilliant.

In 2006, we launched a live show for Milkshake! involving Milkshake presenters and key characters from the shows. The show was a huge success and returned in 2007, touring Butlin’s resorts at Bognor, Skegness and Minehead. The Milkshake! Live Theatre Tour launched in July 2008, with dates for 2009 being planned.

The Commercial Development team are also responsible for Channel 5’s home shopping output. Currently Channel 5 transmits home shopping from 9am to 12 noon on Five USA and midnight to 3am on FIVER.
